An exclusive glimpse into life (past and present) on Grindstone Island, Clayton NY. Clayton Island Tours provides a 1/4 hour boat ride across the St. Lawrence River to the upper town landing on Grindstone and a 1/4 boat ride returning to Clayton. The Grindstone Island Winery will provide transportation on the island with stops at the Winery and the Grindstone Island Heritage Center.
Join us for this exclusive tour to Grindstone Island, Clayton NY – Home to the Grindstone Island Winery. You will board Clayton Islands Tours boat for a 1/4 hour cruise across the St. Lawrence Seaway to Grindstone Island Upper Town Landing.
Grindstone Island Winery will pick up guests for a trip to the Winery with stops along the way for wine tastings at the Upper and Lower Schoolhouses. As the winery bus travels on dirt roads through the interior of the islands you will view farmlands with grazing cattle and majestic oak forests along the way.
The “Upper Schoolhouse”, now the “Grindstone Island Research and Heritage Center” is still set up as the one room school, complete with quarters where the teacher lived on the island. “The “Lower Schoolhouse”, now the “Heritage Museum” displays the rich history of island life and students who attended the schools, before heading to the winery, a small family vineyard that grows and produces 10 vintages on-site.
At the winery, enjoy a tasting of your choice of wine. Bottles of Wine, Wine flights, Wine slushies, Craft Beer, Non-alcoholic beverages, charcuterie boards and snacks are all available for purchase.
Clayton Island Tours will pick you up for a short tour back to Clayton. You are welcome to enjoy your purchased wine or other beverages on board as our narrator shares a bit more history of the area.
This tour includes boat transportation, island transportation, museum entry & 3 wine tastings.
**Comfortable, sturdy shoes are recommended. Must be able to get in & out of the boat & bus, and walk up a small hill on a gravel road.**
This tour is for adults 13+ and children 5-12. No children under 5. Any child required to be in a car seat may not attend this tour. Adults $48.00 / Children 5-12 $28.00
